Cordova District Fishermen United
CDFU is a nonprofit organization of Cordova area fishermen who have banded together "to preserve and protect Area E fisheries, and promote safety at sea."
Copper River salmon have been commercially harvested since 1889, and CDFU believes that harvests are sustainable if properly managed. High escapement rates of the salmon to their spawning areas ensure bountiful runs of salmon and the continued health of the fishery year after year.
Copper River salmon are widely sought and considered to be some of the best tasting and most nutritious salmon in the world due to their exceptionally high levels of omega-3 oils. Medical studies have indicated that omega-3 oils help prevent heart disease and possibly inhibit some cancers. The unique journey of the Copper River salmon 300 strenuous miles upstream to their ancestral spawning grounds creates their unparalleled flavor and texture. This is because Pacific salmon do not feed once they enter fresh water for their journey to spawn. Salmon that have a longer and more difficult trip upstream contain a higher fat content, in the form of the healthy omega-3 oils. The muscles required for the arduous journey create the salmon’s firm texture.
