The Homer Spit stretches a few miles into Kachemak Bay-photo by Linda Robinson, PWSRCAC

Homer is located on the north shore of Kachemak Bay on the southwestern edge of the Kenai Peninsula. A 4.5-mile bar of gravel, called the Homer Spit, extends from the Homer shoreline.

Homer is a fishing, trade, and service center that hosts a significant seasonal tourist industry. The population is about 5,300, although it grows markedly during the summer with workers seeking seasonal employment. Approximately 541 area residents hold commercial fishing permits and the fish dock is equipped with cold storage facilities, ice manufacturing, and a vacuum fish-loading system. Sportfishing for halibut and salmon also contributes significantly to the economy. Although commercial and sportfishing are the center of the economic activity, Homer has a large community of artists. A sawmill also processes timber.
