Port Operations and Vessel Traffic Systems Committee

Valdez Marine Terminal-photo by Stan Jones, PWSRCAC

The Port Operations and Vessel Traffic Systems (POVTS) Committee monitors port and tanker operations in Prince William Sound. POVTS identifies and recommends improvements in the vessel traffic navigation systems and monitors the vessel escort system. The committee was instrumental in the addition of two Enhanced Tractor Tugs and three Prevention and Response Tugs that defined the Prince William Sound oil transportation corridor as a world-class escort system.

Update on Committee Activities, December 2007

Key issues for the committee remain with maintaining the high state of prevention capability provided by dual escorts for the double hull tankers, and revisions to the Tanker Contingency Plan and Vessel Escort and Response Plan (VERP). Currently, the committee’s main focus includes the Tanker Escort System, the upcoming Marine Firefighting Symposium, and Corrosion in Double Hulls. In addition, the committee recently developed a Request for Proposal (RFP) regarding a rescue towing vessel analysis for Hinchinbrook Entrance.
