BLUES

Antionette Walker, Kodiak

Antoinette Walker fishes in Bristol Bay and Dutch Harbor, journeying thousands of miles in her 32-foot boat from her home on Kodiak Island. Her encaustic paintings reflect her life and her loves: fishing and Alaska. “I want to sow the beauty of Alaska, vast oceans and skies, untainted, still-virgin. Crystal blue. As filter feeders, Mussels that are so prevalent in our coastal tidelands act as toxin indicators, registering mans waste. The knotted, tangled line that wraps the painting symbolizes my frusturations with corporate America and the lack of consequences for their actions. Wrap it up and put a price on it, its yours, swipe the bar code.  I have newspaper articles and charts imbedded in the wax that tell the facts on the Spill over the years. In doing this I found it hard to ignore and not be influenced with what is happening today as people chant DRILL BABY DRILL!!”
