DRILL BABY DRILL
Michael Walsh, Homer
Archival documentation of the Pipeline’s construction from the North Slope to the port of Valdez is overlaid on video of a sex worker. The video establishes a parallel between the petroleum industry and the sex industry, the landscape and the female body, exposing the exploitation of Alaska to big money and degrading economic habits.
Michael Walsh moved to Alaska from San Francisco six years ago. A filmmaker by training, he has painted portraits since 2000 and worked at AMIPA (Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association) archiving he became familiar with historical Alaskan footage that probably seemed “everyday” at the time it was shot.
