Gretchen Sagan, Anchorage

“I witnessed the Exxon Valdez oil spill first-hand as a young girl. With regard to my work for the SPILL show, I am constantly examining life situations and attempt to portray the bare essence of an event, feeling or sensation. I appreciate the opportunity to revisit my thoughts, emotions and reaction to the event 20 years later.”

GretchenSagan received a fine art degree in printmaking from Eesti Kunstiakadeemia, in Tallinn, Estonia. Since then, she maintains ties to galleries and art houses in Europe via shows and fellowships. Since returning to Anchorage in 2003 she has had several solo exhibitions here and abroad which feature her preferred medium of intaglio prints and charcoal drawings. As of late she have taken brush in hand and have produced several paintings on canvas.
