“All my life I have spent my summers on the beaches of Kodiak Island gillnetting for salmon. I am constantly surrounded by Kodiak’s natural beauty. Photography has given me an opportunity to share my love and passion for this island.
Before Alaska became a state in 1959 the salmon industry was nearly destroyed by the unsustainable fishing practices of large salmon packing companies. Fish traps devastated the natural stocks. In 1989 the Exxon Valdez oil spill disaster echoed early corporate recklessness toward the environment. The results of the spill once again nearly destroyed the salmon industry.”
Alf Pryor displays his work in Kodiak’s Galleries and he has also worked with Plitt Seafoods, a Chicago based company, on a number of commercial photography projects promoting wild salmon.
