20-Year Anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

It has been 20 years since the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound and thanks to Alaskans’ commitment to avoiding another disaster, citizen oversight in the Sound has grown from a concept to a reality. However, Alaska must not forget the valuable lessons learned from its most devastating environmental disaster. Historians and experts attribute the Exxon disaster to complacency among citizens, industry, and government.

The following documents provide information about the events of March 24, 1989 and the 20 years of recovery, prevention and advances in technology regarding the transportation and clean up of oil in Prince William Sound.
