Valdez Marine Safety Committee

The council participates as a member of the Valdez Marine Safety Committee, a forum for planning, assessing, and communicating operational measures that promote safe and efficient use of Prince William Sound and the Port of Valdez.

The committee includes representatives from industry, state and federal maritime and regulatory organizations, and PWSRCAC.

The VMSC has recently developed a Marine Safety Recognition Award, which will be presented annually to an individual, group, organization, or company whose efforts significantly and proactively contributed to improving maritime safety and/or maritime environmental protection in Prince William Sound.


Annual Marine Safety Recognition Award

The Valdez Marine Safety Committee (VMSC) Marine Safety Recognition Award is presented annually to an individual, group, organization, or company whose efforts significantly and proactively contributed to improving maritime safety and/or maritime environmental in Prince William Sound.

Nominations are now invited for the 2011 VMSC Marine Safety Recognition Award. Nominations must be received by February 1, 2012 (deadline extended).

Award
A plaque, certificate, and letter signed by the Executive Board of the Valdez Marine Safety Committee will be presented at a formal ceremony in Valdez.

Eligibility
Nominees must be an individual, group, organization, or company which made a significant and proactive contribution to improving maritime safety and/or protection of the maritime environment in Prince William Sound. Nomination does not require VMSC affiliation and will be accepted from all communities within Prince William Sound. Individuals may not nominate themselves, but may nominate their company or organization.

Criteria
Nominee's contribution to marine safety and/or maritime environmental protection in Prince William Sound must fall within at least one of the following categories:

  1. An unusually high level of performance over an extended period of time;
  2. The successful completion of a program/project with significant impact on the maritime community;
  3. A single action or effort that is so outstanding it warrants recognition.

Nominations
Must be submitted in letter form. Nominations should identify the nominee and include a summary outlining specific efforts and accomplishments of the nominee and impacts of those efforts. Nominations should include supporting documentation that may include but is not limited to letters of recommendation, descriptions/results of research or projects, newsletter or journal articles, and pictures.

Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will consist of four VMSC member representatives.
