Telecommunications in Prince William Sound

Montague Island in southern Prince William Sound-PWSRCAC photo

While the variety of options for communications in Prince William Sound is expanding at a rapid pace, it is nevertheless an issue to consider. Responders to an oil spill must be able to communicate efficiently and without interruption due to system overload.

During the early days of the effort to address the Exxon Valdez oil spill, some public communications systems experienced blocked calls; the facilities were not designed then to handle such a heavy volume.

Improvements have been made since then, including increased bandwidth, Internet and email access, and updated cell and satellite phone service. Two-way radios are also available.
