Coastal Management
The Alaska Coastal Management Program (ACMP), run by the State of Alaska, provides stewardship of Alaska’s coastal resources. Its mission is to ensure a healthy, vibrant Alaskan coast that efficiently sustains long-term economic and environmental productivity.
Since the council provides oversight of oil transportation through Prince William Sound, a region that includes thousands of miles of coastline, we monitor ACMP and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP) activities. Our goal of “citizens promoting environmentally safe operation of the Alyeska terminal and associated tankers” is directly related to healthy coastal environments—air and water quality, non-indigenous species, etc.
Very little changed regarding the program until 2002, when significant changes began to occur in the form of state legislation. See related article in The Observer: Council tracks development push as new governor and legislators take control.
The council continues to monitor legislation affecting ACMP.
