Walt began his employment with the Council in May of 2016. He was born in Pennsylvania, grew up in Northwest N.J., and moved to Alaska in 1980. He has a B.A. in Sociology from Monmouth College in West Long Branch N.J. and a M.A. in Sociology from Washington State University. He has spent most of his career in Alaska working in municipal government including 8 years as Borough Manager of the Lake and Peninsula Borough and 12 years as City Manager of the City of Homer. He has a great affection for Prince William Sound and was the City Planner in Cordova for four years immediately following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. He spends free time reading and trying to stay current on economic, environmental, and political affairs. He enjoys the outdoors and his activities include biking, hiking, kayaking and skiing. He also enjoys listening to Bruce Springsteen and rooting for the Seattle Mariners. He lives in Anchorage with his wife Mary who works for the National Park Service.
