On Thursday, December 1, the Council will host our annual Science Night at the Embassy Suites in Anchorage (600 E Benson Blvd). This year’s topic is Sustaining Resilience through Change. Please join us to hear about the latest research that affects the safe transportation of oil through Prince William Sound.
This event is an initiative of the Council’s Scientific Advisory Committee. SAC, as it’s known, ensures Council projects are based on the best scientific practices available.

5:25 p.m. – Opening remarks
5:30 – 6:00 p.m. – Ongoing Climate Change in the Northern Gulf of Alaska, Presenter – Rick Thoman, Climate Specialist with the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy, UAF The changing climate of Prince William Sound and northern Gulf of Alaska pose challenges for societal activities as the future brings unexpected and unprecedented extreme events both on land and in the ocean. Rick will explore some of the ways the ocean and climate have changed and provide insights to changes in the coming decades.
6:00 – 6:30 p.m. – Kelp Farming in Alaska, Presenter – Melissa Good, Mariculture Specialist with Alaska Sea Grant The mariculture industry in Alaska is currently small, yet poised to grow. Seaweeds are increasing in production and there is support across the state to grow the industry with increasing interest from communities and coastal residents. Melissa will give background on this industry and discuss some available resources and upcoming initiatives.

7:00 – 7:30 p.m. – Beyond BTEX: Understanding the Chemical Composition and Associated Risk of Hydrocarbon Oxidation Products in the Unresolved Complex Mixture, Presenter – Dr. David C. Podgorski, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of New Orleans David will introduce why hydrocarbon oxidation products (HOPs) are of emerging concern to human health and the environment and discuss sources of HOPs. He will share preliminary results from work examining the toxicity of HOPs to bay mussels collected from Cook Inlet.
7:30 – 8:00 p.m. – Invasive European green crab in Alaska’s Coastal Ecosystems, Presenter – Jasmine Maurer, Harmful Species Program Coordinator at Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Jasmine will explore invasive green crab biology, ecological and economic impacts of this global marine invader, and known status in Alaska. She will share how state, federal, tribal, and local partners are working together on early detection, rapid
