Council held Board meeting and book launch in Valdez, May 6-8

The Council held a Board meeting in Valdez on Thursday and Friday, May 7-8, 2026.

In conjunction with the Board meeting, the Council launched its new book, “Protectors of Prince William Sound,” with author and artist Tom Crestodina. This illustrated book explores the equipment, technology, local expertise, and skilled personnel that make our region’s maritime oil spill prevention and response system one of the best in the world.

The Council will be hosting events to celebrate the launch of Protectors of Prince William Sound.

The Council held several public events with Crestodina, including book signings, an author talk at the Valdez library, and drawing activities with students. The Council and distribute the new book to other communities in our region during regular outreach activities in the coming year. Board meeting: Thursday and Friday, May 7-8

The meeting was held in the Valdez Civic Center, at 314 Clifton Drive.

Board meetings are open to the public, except for executive sessions.

The Council conducted regular business during the meeting, including seating of established directors and committee members, election of new Board officers and updates from Council ex officio members, staff and committees. Other topics included on the agenda were:

  • An activity report by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company on the Valdez Marine Terminal and Ship Escort Response Vessel System operations.
  • A report on geographic response strategies developed for the Copper River Delta and Flats area to help protect this sensitive area in the event of an oil spill.
  • A presentation on marine bird surveys conducted in September and November 2025, in and around the Prince William Sound tanker escort zone and Valdez Marine Terminal.
  • A summary of the Council’s monitoring of drills and exercises in 2025.
  • A report from the Council’s legislative monitors and staff on political developments and prospects coming out of Washington, D.C. and Juneau.
